How many times water is recirculated through the system. Higher ratios mean more thorough treatment, like re-rinsing for extra cleanliness.

How long water stays in each wetland stage. Longer times allow plants and microbes more time to remove pollutants - like letting tea steep longer for stronger flavor.

Measures organic pollution - food waste, sewage, etc. Higher BOD means more organic matter that bacteria need oxygen to break down. Like measuring how much "food" is in the water.

Tiny particles floating in water that make it cloudy - dirt, sand, organic matter. Like the sediment in a dirty aquarium. TSS affects water clarity and quality.

A nutrient from fertilizers, sewage, and waste. Too much causes algae blooms and fish kills. Wetland plants absorb nitrogen like a sponge, removing it from water.

Another nutrient (from detergents, fertilizers) that causes algae overgrowth. Even small amounts can pollute. Plants and soil in wetlands trap and remove phosphorus.
